CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

ELLYNE SLOWLY GOT to her feet, realizing she was no longer in danger. Though the spells kept coming, colliding with her body and causing intense pain before dissipating, they didn’t appear to cause her permanent harm. Her arms and legs tingled—minor at first, as if they’d fallen asleep. And with each spell that hit her, the sensation grew, but she remained otherwise unaffected.

“How is this possible?” someone shouted.

“Our spells have no effect! What kind of magic is this?” another guard shouted.

With each spell that hit her, Ellyne felt the tingly warmth within her intensify. She should have been dead countless times by now and, while she didn’t understand how or why she still lived, she wasn’t willing to stand by and watch. She knew an opportunity when she saw one.

Ellyne remembered feeling this very sensation just before she’d clobbered the grika back at the murder shack. Although she still understood none of this, she knew it was her best chance.

It was her only chance.

“This had better work,” she growled just before she charged one of the groups. They still lobbed spells at her from every direction, but now she saw uncertainty in their eyes. And, as she closed the distance, they tried to back up.

They felt fear. Ellyne felt rage.

There was nowhere for them to go and, as her fist collided with the first man’s face, a wave of force rippled outward, cracking the concrete and catapulting the group into the air. Men and women were thrown in all directions, slamming violently into the walls, the ceiling, and the floor.

If they were dead, she had no idea, but she couldn’t linger to find out. She did know, however, that the other bastards still chucking spells at her were about to get the same treatment.

“Holy crap! Did you see that?”

“What was that? What happened?”

“What do we do?”

“Use your guns! Shoot her!”

Ellyne was on them before anyone could act. She was a flurry of kicks and punches as she darted, dodged, and attacked anyone nearby. Bones and wands snapped as she fought furiously, unable to differentiate between the two as each attack was fueled by a power she didn’t understand but thoroughly enjoyed.

She drew her sword and pressed the button to extend it. Now that she knew her fists could hurt them, she assumed her sword could, too.

Each guard or soldier froze with a look of terror and confusion painted on their faces. Ellyne breathed deeply and concentrated. The inner warmth had dwindled but was still there. If Nicole was right, and this was all fueled by flocia, then she needed more.

Unfortunately, for these poor slobs, she was surrounded by it.

She could feel it in the spells around her and in the very structure of the building. Everything was flocia and flocia was everywhere. And as she felt it, she embraced it—she absorbed it. Painful warmth trickled into her body as she and her assailants stared at one another.

Even the two men holding Nicole were transfixed as she struggled in their grips.

“I told you to use your guns! This bitch can’t deflect bullets!”

Guns.
